Stoneybrooke SCA Meeting Minutes

Stoneybrooke Citizens Association (SCA) Chairman, Mike Jurkowski, began the meeting by discussing issues involving Stoneybrooke and the surrounding area. Eleven people attended the meeting.
Topics included the following:
Cold Spring Lane Barrier - The structural portion of the Cold Spring Lane barrier project is complete. The next portion of the project is to purchase landscaping for the barrier area (and, at the same time, find some Stoneybrooke volunteers to install the landscaping – if interested, please contact Mike).
Cox Communications - Cox recently visited Stoneybrooke to finish the upgrade work they began two years ago. At this point, they are reviewing the streets, sidewalks, and yards they damaged while performing their upgrades. As part of their review, they are leaving spray-painted marks in spots where repairs are needed. For example, a white “X” on your driveway apron means Cox (with the assistance of the VDOT) is planning to replace your apron.
Verizon DSL - In response to many questions from Stoneybrooke residents, Mike is planning to investigate why Verizon DSL is not available to all Stoneybrooke residents. Residents with a 660 telephone prefix can get the service, but those with a 765 or 768 prefix cannot get the service.
Incident near Stoneybrooke – In early September, gunshots were fired in the intersection of S. Kings Hwy and Stoneybrooke Lane. This incident occurred between 2-3am. Fairfax County police have captured the person responsible for this incident.
Incident at Target – In early September, a woman was approached by an armed assailant in the local Target parking lot. This incident occurred around 9pm. Fairfax County Police, at the request of Target, are evaluating the level of security currently in place at Target.
Stoneybrooke Yard Sale – The Yard Sale is scheduled for October 1, 2005. The cost is $2 per household.
Stoneybrooke Fall Bash – Lots of yummy chili will be served at the Fall Bash on October 1, 2005. Flyers announcing the fall bash will be delivered to all Stoneybrooke residents.
Sentinel – Mike discussed the recent changes to the Sentinel. Since we could not find (or politely coerce) anyone in Stoneybrooke to take over the Sentinel responsibilities, the SCA board hired a fancy schmancy private editor to create the Sentinel (beginning with the September issue). Meeting attendees seemed pleased with the new look of the Sentinel. One attendee requested a larger font size for the Sentinel. Mike will discuss this issue with the editor.
Jane Norberg’s House – Jane’s family mentioned to Mike that they are planning to put Jane’s house on the market in the coming weeks. If you know anyone who might be interested in joining the Stoneybrooke family, please contact Mike.

Letter of Appreciation
Mike presented Dana Kauffman with a letter of appreciation from the SCA for his dedication to the Cold Spring Lane barrier project. The letter is included at the end of the Sentinel.

Dana Kauffman
Lee District Supervisor, Dana Kauffman, attended the meeting to provide updates on issues in, and around, the Lee District. Topics included:
Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) – The Department of Defense (DOD) recently decided to shift 20,000 DOD positions to Ft. Belvoir. This decision potentially will affect numerous aspects of life in Fairfax County including traffic patterns, commute times, and housing prices. The DOD is hoping to complete this shift in 4-6 years. For more information, visit www.belvoir.army.mil and click on the “BRAC Information” link.
S. Kings Hwy/Harrison Rd Intersection – Fairfax County is funding the widening/renovation of this intersection. Preliminary engineering evaluation begins in Oct. 2005. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2007/2008.
Telegraph Road – With the BRAC decisions, more emphasis is being given to the widening of Telegraph road. Initial focus will be on the Beulah to Hayfield portion of the road.
I-495/Telegraph Road Interchange – New plans for the Telegraph road interchange were recently submitted. The plan includes “flyovers” to both Huntington Road and S. Kings Hwy. For more information, visit www.wilsonbridge.com.
Wilson Bridge Project
Alex Lee, an engineer on the Wilson Bridge Project, attended the meeting to discuss the latest happenings including:
S. Washington Street Shift – To provide space for foundation work in the Charles St. area, portions of I-495 were shifted south near the S. Washington St. overpass. This shifting occurred in July/August. Unless you have been hibernating, you must have noticed this shift by now.
Route 1 Ramp – The new ramp from Route 1 to northbound I-495 will open on Monday, September 19, 2005. This ramp should alleviate some of the congestion problems associated with that area.
I-495 Interchanges – The use of the interchanges associated with the new bridge will require a “paradigm shift” for local drivers. The cloverleaf interchanges will be a thing of the past. For more information on what the Wilson Bridge Project has in store for us, visit www.wilsonbridge.com.
“Pardon Our Dust” Meeting – Local residents are invited to a meeting to discuss issues related to the Wilson Bridge Project (including the Telegraph Rd. Interchange). The meeting is scheduled for 7:00pm Oct. 12, 2005 at Cameron Elementary School.
