Message from
the Chairman
Is it really September? Are the kids
really back in school, do we really have to look forward to raking
leaves, is it really going to get cold soon and, do we REALLY HAVE
TO SIT THROUGH REDSKIN GAMES AGAIN? Geez, what a shame!
I hope everyone had a great summer. We enjoyed lots of hours and
fun at the pool, a nice, long family vacation at Surf City, NC,
but we also nursed Andrew through a broken left wrist suffered during
Tae Kwon Doe class. And, of course, it was one week before we left
for the beach. Long story on that but it looks like “Sensi
Ski” will be okay.
It’s been a “quietly active” summer, so let me
update you with everything I know…
September SCA Meeting
Our quarterly SCA Meeting will be on Thursday, September 15 at 7:30
pm at the Stone Mansion. Our guest speakers this time around will
be our Lee District Supervisor Dana Kauffman, and Alex Lee, from
the Wilson Bridge Project. When Dana asked what we’d like
him to discuss I simply replied, “BRAC.” That should
keep him busy for a while. As for Alex, he’ll be bringing
along some drawings and the latest on the Telegraph Road interchange
thinking. That ought to be interesting too.
Family Fall Bash
No reservations necessary. Come as you are. Bring the kids and enjoy
a nice visit with your neighbors. Bring money for your 2005 –
2006 SCA Dues (see below). We should be fully depressed by the Redskins
first couple games, so it’ll be a nice way to ease the pain.
Fall Yard Sale
No need to call anyone to reserve, just put your treasures out and
collect the loot. As usual, we’ll put a Friday/Saturday ad
in The Post and the sandwich board sign out on South Kings
Highway for a couple days before. And as always (or recently, anyway),
we’ll be around to collect $2.00 from all families/individuals
who participate.
Virginia Hills Pool and Swim Team
First, congratulations to the members of the Virginia Hills Tidal
Wave Swim Team, who finished their regular season undefeated, won
their divisional relays (by a whopping margin) and won their division
in the Fort Hunt IM Relay carnival as well. The kids obviously had
a great season and a lot of fun along the way. About half the team
has committed to a winter swim program, so we’ll be looking
for another good season next year as they will likely move up a
division to stronger competition. Great job, gang!
Also, the pool is now sponsoring a late season membership sale.
If you purchase your share now, you will pay no dues until 2006.
Share (membership) prices will rise in 2006, so this is a good chance
to get the lower price now. Might be a nice Christmas gift for someone,
or for your family (put a picture of a pool in the kids' stockings
and watch THAT reaction!).
Sentinel Production & Distribution
Good news for you on both fronts. As you can see from how the Sentinel
looks, we did indeed hire a professional newsletter writer/web developer
over the summer. Heather Martin is our new writer/developer. She
lives close by Stoneybrooke and does this on a part-time basis as
a stay-at-home mom. We hope you like the new Sentinel and
especially its ease of navigation. We are, of course, open to suggestions
so let us know what you think.
SCA Dues and Rate Increase
If you are not able to attend the Fall Bash and pay your SCA Dues,
you will receive an invoice for your 2005 – 2006 SCA Dues
in either your email inbox or your mailbox. The Dues for this year
have been raised to $20 to cover the cost of our new Sentinel
production process.
Cold Spring Barrier Update
After attending a meeting in June to review minor design changes,
I thought that construction would have begun by now. I was recently
informed by Supervisor Dana Kauffman's office that work will commence
next week, after Labor Day, and the construction contract calls
for work to be completed by October 5.
Event Coordinators
Many thanks to Barbara Bougie, Suzanne Caldwell, Amanda Miller,
and Jennifer Avila who have agreed to tag team the coordination
of youth events for the coming year. Their first gig will be the
Kids Halloween party, which will hopefully include the parade, as
it did last year. Can’t wait to see that again!
As for a Spring Fling/Fall Bash Coordinator, and Sentinel
Ad Sales, no one has come forward yet to claim those prizes! We
will move forward with the Fall Bash on Cobblestone Court and worry
about the Spring Fling when time comes. As for ad sales, I’m
still looking for someone to do that.
T-Mobile Balloon Test
Recall that T-Mobile has been attempting to erect a cell tower in
our area for some time. The project has now been proposed for a
back corner in Lee District Park. As such, T-Mobile will be conducting
a "balloon test" on Saturday, September 24 from 8:30 -
11:00 a.m. The rain date will be the next day, same time. The balloon
will rise to the requested tower height of 95'. T-Mobile tells me
that cell service for T-Mobile customers in this area will improve
dramatically and that Cingular has requested to be included on the
tower as well. No word from Verizon or Sprint.
All for now…need to go sit in my easy chair and cringe at
the ‘Skins…
Mike
Message from
Supervisor
Dana Kauffman
Remember the book Everything I needed to Know, I learned in
Kindergarten? Well, the sequel could be, I Re-learned Everything
at Boy Scout Camp. I say this having both survived and learned
from camping the second week of August at Goshen Scout Reservation
with my son and a gaggle of boys and dads from Pack 1519.
With my minivan pointed west to begin our adventure, I heard “I
hope I don’t get car sick” from my son’s seatmate.
“I hope you don’t either,” I said while pushing
in the first cassette of a book on tape—praying that it would
distract your average 9- or 10-year old for four hours or the correct
exit off I-81, whichever came first. “Be prepared” is
a great motto!
We arrived without mishap and were turned over to a pleasantly
perky 15-year-old staffer who promptly told us all the things we
couldn’t do at Camp PMI “or else you will die.”
That’s PMI, as in the parking garage empire in the District.
Yes, America, things are so tight that even the Boy Scouts can be
naming opportunities.
The first activity after unloading was a rousing game of dodge
ball where an army of kids got to throw multiple balls at camp staff
and us leaders. This made the boys smile far too much for my comfort.
After all, aren’t we supposed to be the “authority figures?”
Later, I learned how much authority I was really going to have:
fire dowsing and the latrine gang. The moral? Think highly of yourself
and you’re sure to mop-up after everyone.
In full swing the next days at camp, I observed the following:
Guns are fun; arrows go where they want to go; and no one wants
to do tie-dye anymore. Also, it is tough to get people – especially
those less than five feet in height – to move together as
a group. This holds even if they want to go where you want to lead
them. One such place is “Scoutcraft” where boys swing
on monkey ladders and learn the skill that separates us from monkeys
– fire building! Fire is even more fun than guns.
As a climax to life in the not-quite-so-wild, we psyched ourselves
and our charges up for a hike to “Viewing Rock.” It
proved—once again—that a wonderful end is worth a challenging
journey. Also, for all the concerns I hear about the Scouts and
exclusionary religion, the closest we experienced to invoking any
deity at camp was singing a rousing version of “God Bless
my Underwear.” Personally, I blessed God for my dry socks.
The final take-away from Boy Scout Camp for me is this: We can
focus our energies on absolute child protection or we can set guidelines—“do
this and you will die”—and let our children be challenged,
bruised, and ultimately be able to handle the good and the bad that
life sends their way. I vote for the latter.
Tour de Lee
Hold the Date for the Sixth Annual Tour de Lee
Sunday, October 30 at 8:30 am
The Tour de Lee is a bicycle event geared to riders of all abilities.
It is family-friendly and showcases bicycle opportunities in Lee
District. Three routes are available: a 15-mile intermediate ride;
a shorter family ride; and a challenging 30-mile ride.
Also:
* Free bike safety checks performed by Bikes@Vienna
* Free refreshments
* Bike rodeo for children
For more information or to register, call the office of Lee District
Supervisor Dana Kauffman at 703-971-6262.
Trash Collection
Our new Secretary, John Finamore, spoke with Virginia Trash
Service recently to ask about the $1.50 rate increase. VTS told
John the increase is due to the following:
533% increase in worker's compensation insurance
47% increase in health insurance
6.5% increase in FFX county dumping fees
27% increase in diesel fuel
2% increase in wages
Thanks John, for tracking this down!

Announcements, Etc.
Greetings to new residents.
Cmdr. Gene & Krysti Doyle are
the new owners and residents at 6717 Stoneybrooke Lane. Gene is
from Kalispell, MT and Krysti is from Fort Lauderdale. They met
in Hawaii and now have one daughter Stefani who turned 8 in August.
Stefani starts 2nd grade this fall as dad makes his first tour in
the Pentagon on the Joint Staff. Krysti is a full-time mom.
Chris Taylor and Jon Pelletier are
the new owners and residents at 6822 Stoneybrooke Lane. Both are
recent grads of Virginia Tech. Chris is from Fairfax and works for
the Fairfax County Public Schools in the SAC program. He hopes to
catch on with the Schools as a school-based technology counselor.
Jon is from Massachusetts and is a budget analyst with the Department
of Justice.
Welcome to Army Capt. Chip O'Neal
and his wife, Linda Lio! Chip and Linda recently
moved into 7004 Cold Spring Lane. Capt. O'Neal is a Medical Operations
Officer working in the Pentagon, and Linda is a stay-at-home mom
with their children. Caden, 4 years old, will start his pre-school
career this fall at Virginia Hills Baptist and 22 month-old Rylie
is about as cute as they come! Chip is from Atlanta, and Linda is
from Pittsburgh (Monroeville side, she says).
Josh and Kim Pritchett are the new
owners at 6715 Stoneybrooke Lane. Josh is a local guy who attended
Groveton Elementary and West Potomac. Kim is from Syracuse, NY.
They met at UVA. Both were engineering majors, Kim graduating in
1999 and Josh (ChemE) in 2002. Josh is now a patent examiner at
USPTO and Kim is a management consultant with Unisys. They are apparently
bored however, as Josh will begin law school at Georgetown this
fall and Kim has a booming wedding consultant business. Both remain
employed full-time during these nightly and weekend adventures.
And to make matters REAL interesting, they are expecting their first
child in January. Sounds like they’re ripe for positions on
the Stoneybrooke Board!
Andrew & Lara O’Neel are
the new owners/residents at 3804 Cobblestone Court. Both are from
Texas (Houston and Port Arthur) by way of their most recent stay
in Alabama. They are both Aggies, so if there’s an A&M
game on, you’ll probably see them standing in front of the
TV watching. They bring with them their dog, Juno, and a newfound
interest in real estate investment and housing restoration. They
also have found out it’s hard work! Lara will soon be reentering
the job market to use her mechanical engineering degree and background
in information technology. She is interested in networking and talking
with anyone who needs her skills.
Doug and Karen Delap are the new
owner/residents at 6905 Stonebridge Court. Doug is retired from
the Army and a long career in DoD contracting. Truth is, he’s
Santa Claus who has decided to have his summer home here in Stoneybrooke.
He’s also best friends with the famous Hogettes, who reside
in first row seats at Redskins games. Santa is a few rows back.
Karen is a program manager with the Defense Threat Reduction Agency.
She is an award-winning country and western dancer. When she married
Doug, the band played, “Here Comes Santa Claus,” for
their wedding march. You should see their wedding pictures! This
is excellent news for those of us with young kids here in Stoneybrooke.
Now, when they’re misbehaving we can simply say, “Hey,
Santa is watching, and if don’t believe me, I’ll walk
you over to his house to ask him, pal.”
Tyrone and Helena Taylor are the
new owners/residents at 6924 Stoneybrooke Lane. Tyrone owns a graphic
design company and Helena (from the Czeck Republic), is a teacher.
They have 2 children. Caleb, 14, will be a freshman at West Potomac
this fall and their 10 year-old daughter Orion will be a 5th grader
at Groveton. Tyrone and Helena are in the process of tearing apart
the inside of their house and upgrading it to make room for Tyrone’s
art work. Can’t wait to see it when you’re done, should
be stunning!
Also welcome to James & Anastasia Criswell
at 6811 Lamp Post Lane
Congratulations!
Congratulations and best of luck to Dave Pierce who
was recently promoted to Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Air Force.
